i had, have & always will have very mixed feelings about this one. i knew joe strummer and all i’ll say is this: He was (thankfully) NO elvis presley. thank you, and good nite.
i would humbly argue that the direct line from early blue-eyed r&b was less about elvis, and more about eddie cochran and the like. to me, elvis = beatles = watered-down wind-up fop top mod cons. whereas guys like cochran, chuck berry, hank williams were disenfranchised wastrels more akin to, that is = rolling stones = the real deal. but that’s just me……..
and it would be easy to throw johnny cash into the mix, and go like this: man in black leads to VU leads to dolls leads to pistols. but that’d be revisionist at best & therefore cheating.
